How to Defeat Discouragement

It happens to all of us: you're feeling great about your skills on your instrument, and it seems like nothing can stop you from becoming the best musician you can be. Later, you see a performance from somebody ripping the most insane licks and riffs you couldn't ever imagine being able to play. They make it look so effortless. Just like that, your spirits are broken, and you begin to wallow in a pool of discouragement and despair. Guess what? This is normal. What most people don't know, however, is that this is not the end of the world. You don't have to be down because somebody can sweep pick faster than you, because there is always going to be someone like that. I learned to defeat this discouragement by remembering what makes my own guitar playing special to me, and it has helped me enjoy music more now than I ever could have when I would spend my time comparing myself to my guitar heroes. Draw inspiration from the greats, not envy.
