Paul Reed Smith once taught me that the three most important elements of music are harmony, rhythm, and melody, the most important of the three being rhythm. Think about it–if you play a simple melody, with simple harmonic changes behind it, in perfect time, that will sound nice. Regardless of the difficulty, the musical expression will be executed.
