The "rules" in music are important to learn, because only by understanding them can you know how to break them in a way that allows you to create truly awesome music. Of course, everything is subjective, so while you don't have to know music theory to grasp the concepts in this lesson, a foundation will be helpful as you construct your outside sounds over these "wrong" chords.
