Here is a lesson from Guitar Super System demonstrating how to use a "home riff" as a foundation to improvise solos. When you get uncomfortable soloing, you can always revert back to your home riff to regroup. As guitar players, sometimes we can get lost in the shroud of notes we're creating during an improvisation, and sometimes the lick can end in a less than desirable way. With home riffs, we can avoid that subpar ending by allowing for an escape back to our comfort zone, with the audience being none the wiser. This is also a great way to build motifs in your solos.
